Penang, long known as the Pearl of the Orient, is probably the best known and most visited tourist destination in Malaysia, and it is particularly popular with the English. It has a British colonial history, being one of the initial Straits settlements settled by the British East India Company in the late 1700's. As as result, the main town of Georgetown has a significant history, and there are many old buildings to demonstrate this.
The beach areas have more of the upmarket hotels usually booked by package tours, but with a book rate too expensive for many. For a hotel with some charm, check out 1926, in Georgetown. This was British army officers accommodation, built, true to name, in 1926
The beach area in and around Betu Ferungghi is the ideal spot to spend the evening, although is very quiet during the day. Ideally, you could spend the day exploring Georgetown, and visiting the sights, and then head to Betu Ferungghi after dark, when all the restaurants, bars and night bazaar come alive. Also, for some time relaxing on the beach, Betu Ferungghi is the a good option.
There are two main choices when it comes to finding somewhere to stay in Penang. They are either Georgetown, in the east, with its many old buildings, a bustling china town, and a plethora of bars and restaurants, or one of the beach areas in the north of the island, the most popular of which is Betu Ferungghi.
