You will know you are in Mersing, as on the hill to the south of the town, is the Towns name in giant letters, Hollywood style. This can be seen from most areas in town, so you cant forget where you are! Mersing is a sleepy little fishing town, a hundred or so kilometers up Malaysia's eastern coast from Johor Barhu. It has a small tourist area, around the port area at the river mouth, although most of the town doesn't seem that interested in tourists, particularly in the "off" season.
It appears the town is sleepy and un tourist orientated, as, for most tourists, it is used only as a departure point for Tiomen Island, and the other islands of the Seribuat Archipelago, and as a result, a place tourists pass through quickly. As the ferry terminal is located within the river mouth at Mersing, in the off season it often not possible for ferries to depart for Tiomen or the other islands every day, as both tide and weather must be suitable. If you are passing through in the monsoon season, from November, to January, it will often not be possible to get to the islands. That time of year the bulk of the accommodation is not operational, and many operators shut down for several months. As with any holiday, timing is important, and November to January are the times not to visit, if you wish to visit the islands of the Seribuat Archipelago.
In Mersing, accommodation is much more limited, and again, some operators shut down over the monsoonal months, but it is there are still small selection of mid range and cheap options.
