Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia's largest city and the buses from south travel for an hour or more in the city's outskirts, before reaching a point where you can see the Pretoria towers, one of the world tallest buildings, on the approaching skyline, giving you an indication on where the city is. You will disembark the bus at the Puduraya Bus Station on the eastern side of the Chinatown area. A lot of the mid range hotels are in the general area of Chinatown, and the adjacent Merdeka Square and Colonial Districts. Keep in mind, it is usually hot, uncomfortable and very busy, and probably impossible to shop around for a hotel on foot, particularly without a good tourist map.
It would be easiest to get a taxi to drive you to a few hotels, if you haven't already got something booked, so you can view and consider. Unfortunately the taxi drivers often have their own agenda, and are only able to find hotels they want you to look at (obviously paying a commission), not the ones you may had already picked out (obviously not paying commission). The bigger the city, the more suitable it is to book online prior to arriving, even if it is just for the first night, until you become accustomed to were you are, and were you want to be.
