Mandala Wisata Wenare Wana, the sacred Monkey forest, located at the bottom of Monkey Forest Rd, is the other must-see destination in Ubud. The monkeys, three troupes of Balinese Macaques, totalling around 300, have a reasonably bad reputation through guidebooks and with many visitors. The monkeys are greedy, and can get aggressive. This is the case when you have food, and they want it, and particularly when there are plenty of their co-inhabitants around, and they fear another monkey is going to get the banana. As the forest fills with bussed-in tourists from about 10.30, all of who buy bunches of bananas at the entrance; things can become a frantic scramble as monkeys clamber for food.
We have found it is ideal to get to the monkey forest at 9.00ish, and NOT to buy any monkey food. The forest is cool, there are only a handful of tourists walking around, and the monkeys are calm. The monkeys are inquisitive, and if you sit for a minute or two, monkeys will usually come to investigate you. They may well sit peacefully on your shoulder or arm for several minutes while contemplating their day. Alternatively, later in the day, after 4.00, should give a similar experience. The monkeys are well feed, and you will get a much better experience if you are not carrying anything for them to eat. Please always be aware not to touch, or try to restrain a monkey, as they will, and regularly do, bite.
