Ubud is the traditional artist's village area of Bali, and where, in the early years, much of the various art and crafts of the island originated. It is also the only other major tourist destination, after the southern beaches. As it is in the hills between Kuta and the mountains, the temperature is usually a handful of degrees cooler, and the atmosphere considerably more laid back. Although we would not call it quiet, it is a big step back from the frantic pace of Kuta.
The trip from Kuta should take 3-4 hours on the bus, or about 3 hours by private transport. Getting out of Kuta, and then avoiding Denpasar, are the major challenges, and once you start to see open rice fields and farm animals, it gets very easy. There are several different routes you can take if you are using a rental vehicle, and all of them head in the general same northerly direction. Locals in any villages are extremely helpful, so pulling over every time you come to an intersection and asking someone, will soon get you going in the right direction.
