Tulamben is on Bali's north east coast, around 60 odd kilometers east from Lovina Beach. The road along the northeast coast, once past Singaraja, is a very enjoyable drive, on fairly good road, with minimal other traffic. As you get close to Tulamben the vegetation disappears, and you enter another worldly area of old lava flows with green grass-like ground covering. Large boulders abound and very few trees have established themselves. Tulamben is located on he coast, but at the base of Gunung Agung, Bali's largest mountain, another active volcano. Hence the old lava flows.
Tulamben, is only a small town, and offers very little on the land of much appeal, although it is neat enough. The attraction that brings tourists to Tulamben, is a diving wreck that lies just off its shores.
Needless to say, it gets busy, so, in peak season particularly, try to stay local and dive early or late in the day, once the dive tours from Kuta at vacated the area. Although not as spectacular as the USS Liberty, there are several other decent dive sites close to shore, if you are thinking of staying in Tulamben for longer than just the day. From here, it is only a ½ hour or so drive to the next destination, Amed.
