A new highway runs along the coast to Sanur from south of Padangbai, not far from Candidasa. This has greatly sped up the journey between these two towns, as well have having opened up a dozen or more possible future tourist developments along this previously unserviced section of the east coast.
.
Sanur was the first area that larger hotels moved into in the early development days of Bali. Bigger hotels like the Bali Beach Hotel and the Bali Hyatt established here, while Kuta was developing more low-key. In time, Kuta overtook Sanur as tourist central, and Sanur developed a reputation as a bit sleepy. The surf was smaller, and there were less pubs, clubs and fun. It attracted families and older people, against Kuta's party atmosphere. Kuta kept developing and Sanur stayed relatively small and compact. We now appreciate Sanur as the more Bali'ish of the southern beaches, and somewhere to relax and enjoy a nice beach and hotel, as well as some good restaurants and shopping opportunities. The two towns have developed in different directions, and we now think both are worth visiting and enjoying, as they are no longer reflections of each other, as they may have been considered a decade or less ago.
An advantage and good feature of Sanur is that only a walking path runs along the beach, with the main road back from the beach. This makes the beach very useable, and although busy, still enjoyable. Many of the hotels back on to the beach; restaurants are based on the sand, and ferries and surfers can we watched in reasonable comfort, without excessive pressure from hawkers and salespeople
