Apart from the 18th century buildings around Georgetown, that includes Fort Cornwallis, Pinang Peranakan mansion, The clock tower and city hall, the areas most worthy of a visit is the Penang botanical gardens, and Penang Hill.
You can spend a very pleasant afternoon walking around the Botanic gardens. Lush tropical gardens over a large area was very nice, but the major attraction are the large colonies of Rhesus Monkeys.
Without a doubt, the highlight of sightseeing in Penang is to take a trip up Penang hill, to watch sunset over the island. You get to the top of Penang Hill by catching the Funicular. The funicular is a Swiss designed train, and it has been operating up Penang hill since 1922. Because the hill is such a steep accent, the funicular is dragged up and lowered down the hill on cables and this makes for a fascinating and unusual ride. Upon reaching the top, there are various gardens, temples and a mosque, as well as restaurants and kiosks to wander around. We suggest finding a suitable pace to enjoy an early dinner and watched the sun set over the island, enjoying views across Georgetown to the mainland. You must then proceed back down the hill on the funicular after dark.
