Mersing to Malacca

Coming into Mersing from Johor Barhu, the bus drops passengers on the side of the main highway that passes up the east coast, whereas most departing buses leave from the Plaza R&R, which is a lot easier. There are 3 or 4 bus companies with ticketing booths in the plaza, and it is a matter of deciding were you wish to go, and when is the most convenient time to leave. A couple of bus companies have a daily service to Malacca, via Kautan, including S & S, and National Bus Lines. Like everywhere, the buses are often about 1/3 full, and are quite comfortable for the four hour cross Peninsular journey to the west coast. The highway from east to west is still low enough on the peninsular that it is not the mountainous country from father north, and therefore is straight and reasonably fast.

Entry to Malaysia's second largest national park, Endau-Rompin,  is most easily reached from the small town of Kahang on this route. This national park is the only place in Malaysia were the Sumatran Rhinoceros can still be found, and is also one of only a few remaining habitats for Malaysian tigers. However, it is considered unlikely tourists can see either, and even from Kahang you will need to be very well organized in advance on transport and accommodation options if you wish to visit the Endau-Rompin National Park.
