The area referred to as Lovina Beach is really a series of coastal villages to the west of the old capital of Singaraja. Arriving from Mt Batur will involve transversing Singaraja, as you come out of the mountains to the east of town, and need to get to the west. Like the other larger cities in Bali, it is not easy to navigate, but as usual, if you get in trouble, stop and ask someone, as everyone is eager to help a silly tourist.
Lovina appears to have suffered more from the slowdown in tourist numbers after the Bali bombing of 2002, and does not appear to have recovered since, nearly as much as most areas have. To some degree, the tourists appear to have moved to other areas, like Amed and Candidasa. As a result, there are empty shops, and abandoned hotels around, that you don't see elsewhere. In addition, the country life looks to be creeping back in, with a mix of rice paddies and farm animals between hotel developments.
