From the crater rim road you can see the lake area below, to the right of the volcano cone, within the enormous volcano crater, and can progress in this direction. If you don't have your own transport, local motorcyclists will take you down to the lake towns for an appropriate fee. The road down to the lake is a steep, winding decent that requires concentration, and the road is not as quiet as you would expect. There is a constant stream of lorries going up (slowly), and down (much faster), as they trundle back and forth from the lava stone quarries in the crater.
The most accessible towns on the lake are Kedisan, Pura Jati and Toya Bungkah, all of which are on the volcano side of the lake. These towns offer the most spectacular of views, with the volcano towering over one side, and the steep incline of the outer crater rim looming over the lake to the other side. The drop in temperature, and the mountains around the lake view, almost feels like Swiss Alps, not Bali. The market gardens are busy, and obviously fertile, and the whole valley smells strongly of drying onions.
