The beach is the major feature to visit in Kuta, and can be accessed from anywhere along Jalan Kartika Plaza, Jalan Kuta Beach, and from any of the streets leading seaward from Jl Legion, and Jalan Seminyak. The entire stretch of beach is always a hive of activity, with hawkers selling clothes, massage and hair brading everywhere, as well as surfboard rental, drink stands, and beach gear rental. It is a wonderful beach, and well worth spending a bit of time on, as watching the Balinese and tourists interaction is a Bali experience.
To get around Kuta it is best to use the taxis you will see in abundance. These charge a metered fare, so it is unnecessary to negotiate, and will generally get you anywhere within the area for 25,000 rupiah or less. Rental scooters used to be popular around town, but these days the complexity of the network of one-way streets, as well as the fairness and ease of the taxis, makes this a far less appealing option. In holiday and busy periods, you may find some drivers will not turn on their meter, and insist on negotiating a fare. Sometimes it will be easier to jump out and find another taxi, and sometimes you just need to negotiate a fare a little over what you would normally pay. Often easier to remember, what 5000 Rp is worth in you own currency, and how much it is worth arguing over.
