In the late 60 and early 70's, Kuta beach was a fishing village that offered a small range of low-key loseman (basic hotels) and warung (basic restaurants) to service the small but growing tourist traffic of surfers and hippies. It was the essence of Bali - a beautiful white crescent shaped beach, laid back and peaceful, and surrounded by one of the worlds friendliest peoples, the Balinese. Now, 40 years later, the town of Kuta has grown both directions along to coast, and now the adjacent towns of Legion, Tuban and Seminyak all blend into one long development running adjacent to the beach for about 15 kilometres.
Visitor's impressions are mixed over Kuta. Generally, people who have been to Kuta many years before, are appalled by the rampant development, seemingly without any planning, that has turned the area into a complicated, dis-orientating concrete jungle of hotels, restaurants and shops. Visitors arriving for the first time often love the place, particularly anyone looking to have a little fun. Without a doubt, nightlife anywhere else on the island wanes in comparison, as does international standard hotels and dining. There is, however, little doubt, the real Bali that bought such huge tourism development over the last 40 years, has long since moved out. To experience the " real" Bali, one must get out of Kuta.
