Where to stay in Ko Chang
Then main beach areas, of White Sands Beach, Klong Phrao Beach and Lonely Beach, run down the western side of the island. Along the 20 kilometer stretch of road between these beaches, you is a full range of accommodation, from beach front, unpowered huts, to 5 star hotel complexes. As per most of these resort islands, there is a huge range of accommodation, as the quality have improves from their backpacker origin to their upmarket aspirations. Ko Chang is fortunate that is at the point of its evolution where the cheap beach bungalows have yet to all be demolished, with some 2, 3, 4 and even 5 star resorts mixed in for good measure. The northern of the East coast beaches, White sands beach is the most developed, and has the highest standard of accommodation, and the southern beaches at and around Lonely beach, has more lower end huts and bungalows.
To get from Ao Saparat pier to the beaches on west coast, you will need to jump on a Sawngthaew. These are taxi trucks, with bench seats in covered rear tray. They operate as a shared taxi service, and charge between 50 and 70 Baht, depending on which beach you get off at. There will usually be several waiting at the dock, so it is a matter of establishing your destination, and jumping on. Your luggage will go on the roof, and up to 12 people will ride in the covered tray of the vehicle. If you are aware of where you need to get off, there is often a bell you can ring, or knocking on the drivers back window will also achieve the same result. Probably the best you can do is pick the beach you wish to stop at, and wait till the driver stops and tells you that you are there.
