Ko Chang (or alternatively, Koh Chang) is one of Thailand's largest islands, second only to Phuket, and is also the most easterly of the Thai tourist destinations. Like most of the Thai islands it is not far from the mainland, and is easily accessed by one of several ferry services.
The island of Ko Chang is mountainous and apart from a few roads to sights such as waterfalls, the entire inland is dense tropical jungle, and virtually impenetrable away from the coast. The transportation roads all run around the coast, and in many areas, still twist and turn up and over mountainous headlands to get to the beach areas. The mountains rising steeply from the ocean make for spectacular coastal scenery, but this also means that development is limited to a strip only 100m wide or less along the coast.
Ko Chang is relaxed, and days can be passed sunbathing, eating, drinking, shopping, and generally taking it easy. Everything is centred around the beach, and come evening, the previously clear sandy beach, becomes one long restaurant, with tables and chairs appearing from all the beachfront restaurants. Many restaurants offer attractions such as fire shows, to try to draw the crowd.
