After the Cameron Highlands, it is about 250 kilometers further north, to the final destination on this Malaysian Itinerary, the tropical beaches of Penang.
On the way you must pass though Butterworth,an uninteresting industrial town on the Malaysian north coast. It is important however, because it is the point from were you drive to the Island of Penang.
Penang Island is three kilometers off shore from the mainland but it has the longest bridge in south east Asia, joining it to the mainland. Like most of the expressway from Kaula Lumpur, the bridge is a toll, so you pay for your car to cross. However, this doesn't seam to deter anyone, and it is an extremely busy piece of highway, even if it is above the ocean. The free flow of the Malaysian freeway system comes to a grinding halt here, and Penang, along with Kaula Lumpur,is one of the few places in Malaysia unpleasant to drive in. All the roads are busy, two lane roads carry three or four lanes of traffic, and the streets in the main town of Georgetown run off each other at unusual angles that are very disorientating.
