Where Next?
Getting to Ayuthaya from Bangkok can be done in couple of different ways but the most cost effective is by train. Ayuthaya is the fist stop on the Thailand northern train line, which  continues onward through central Thailand, terminating in the northern capital of Chang Mai,and , like most of the other long distance trains,  depart from Bangkok's Huelemphong station. From here, express trains, with first class sleeper service depart northward. However, being express trains, these do not stop at Ayuthaya! The train to Ayuthaya is 3rd class only, and that means very hard wooden seats. But, as it is only 1 - 1.5 hours, the comfort issue is not major.
Getting to Ayuthaya
Next - Ayuthaya
The culture shock factor can take some adjusting to, as like most Asian train systems, everyone and everything gets loaded in and on. 3rd class trains are always hot and smelly which your fellow passengers don't  notice, and they eat the weirdest & oddest smelling food continually. The trains run pretty much every hour from Huelemphong, during daylight hours, and a a result,  getting one is not to difficult, and if you miss one, another will be along soon.
Once you disembark at Ayuthaya, you will find plenty of tuk-tuks waiting to take you to  the old city centre,  or to your choice of accommodation.  Although not loaded with hotel options, there are choices from guesthouses to 3-4 star hotels. Like usual, book online for 3 and 4 star and walk up for guesthouses. As Ayuthaya is only 85 kilometers from Bangkok a lot of tourists come here on day trips, so early mornings and evenings are peaceful and pleasant, and hotel occupancy rates are not high, thus good rates can be found or negotiated.
