To progress north from Kaula Lumpur, at this point our self guided itinerary our recommendation is to hire a car. This is because several of the places on our Malaysian Itinerary are difficult to get to by bus, or other means. This is particularly the case for Genting and Bukit Fraser. Also bus travel can get a bit monotonous after a few trips, so driving yourself mixes things up a little.
At these points the highway spreads into ten or more lanes, having different lanes for different methods of payment. Usually, stay left, as the inner lanes are usually for electronic tags and cards. The left lanes, usually the slowest, cater for cash, and are the most forgiving of ignorance. Each segment of the highway costs ten or more ringet per vehicle, and traveling the entire north to south trip will cost aprox 150RM. It is important to make sure you have enough cash, as it is difficult enough at toll booths, without having to try and pay by Visa. There are transport service centres along the highway, that are based around "truck" stops, so their are plenty of places to refuel, eat, rest, get money, shower and toilet if you so need.
Most driving in Malaysia is fairly straight forward, and Malaysia has a modern, three to five lane highway that passes all the way up the west coast, from Johor Barhu in the south, to Georgetown in the north. This is, however, a toll road, and at either side of each city or town the highway passes though a toll booth appears.
