All the development at Candidasa is along the main street, Jl Raya Candidasa, a street that carries all the traffic from the north and east toward Denpasar and the southern beaches, so as a result, it can be quite busy and quite noisy. The more peaceful area is to the north of Jl Raya Candidasa, where the main road turns inland, and a much quieter series of village roads lead to a range of hotels backing onto the sea. This is a little out of the main town area, and most of the accommodation is on the main street, stretching over 3 or 4 kilometres.
Candidasa is probably most well known for its poor development planning. Originally, a nice black sand beach bought tourists, and as a result, developers built hotels. To build hotels they "mined" the local reefs to provide building materials. The removal of the protective reef resulted in the erosion of the beach. Now there is no beach! To stop the erosion, breakwaters and piers have been built now, and the erosion has been contained, however, the beach is long gone.
Candidasa is now a beach resort, with no beach. Although this sounds unpleasant, the area still has a peaceful and enjoyable feel, yet is well serviced with decent hotels, restaurants and facilities, which all makes for a nice feel. Also, It is closer to Sanur and Kuta than the north beach areas. Diving and fishing are still good propositions, and there are many local operators who can show you the good sites. Again, most are close to shore, so accessible and reasonably cheap to reach.
