Ayuthaya is the capital of ancient Siam, the home of the king and ruling class, and the political and financial capital of the Thai empire, from about 1357 to 1767, right up until the city was invaded and conquered by the Burmese. After that, the evolving leader, and future King Rama I, established the new capital at Bangkok. During its time of prominence, Ayuthaya was heavily influenced by the Khmer culture and architectural style, and the empire was a prolific builder of temples, and the current charm of the area is the multitude of temple ruins scattered within a manageable distance from Ayuthaya centre.
Wat Yai Chaya Mongkol, the great temple of Auspicious victory, is another important and significant complex of temples, Chedis, rows of buddhas, and a 15m long reclining Buddha are all significant contributors to this complex. Definitely worth a visit is Wat Phanan Choeng, with its 19 meter tall "golden" Buddha being the most revered site by the modern Ayuthayans. Other important sites to include Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Phra Mahathat and Wat Thammikarat
In addition to the temples, there is an interesting elephant park located near the city centre. If you are not going to one of the more mountainous regions, where jungle elephant trekking is available, this is a good option. The Ayuthaya elephant park gives the novice an opportunity to ride their first elephant. The elephants and their handlers are presented in a setting in keeping with the previous generations duties in the royal court.
The reason you visit Ayuthaya are the temple complex's. Wat Chai Watthanaram Is a large complex, with a series of Chedis, and brick ruins. It gives you a fair idea of how this complex may have looked 3 or 4 hundred years ago (with a little imagination).
