Amed is the newest beach resort area on Bali's booming north coast, and one that is becoming quite popular. Amed, and the other villages that have become part of Amed as far at tourists are concerned, is located on the far north east coast, tucked in behind Gunung Lempuyang, in the area where the decent from mountain to sea level is quickest on the entire island. The road to Amed turns off from the main highway from Singaraja to Candidasa, at a town called Culik, and although down a minor road, is well signed, and a very pleasant drive, although quite narrow at times.
Amed looks and feels a bit different from the other coastal resort areas of Bali, as the beach areas are a series of pretty coves, with higher headlands separating a half a dozen of them. Accommodation is both on the headlands, with quite spectacular ocean views, as they are quite high, and within the coves, close to the beaches (again, black sand beaches). Being a newer area, not a lot of 4 and 5 star hotels have reached the area yet, most of the accommodation is three star and below, although a lot is quite new, and quite comfortable. There are restaurants scattered about, although mostly you would eat at your hotels restaurant.
Apart from scenery, and the feeling of getting away from it all, diving is the main attraction in the area. There are plenty of easily accessible reefs, as well as a Japanese fishing boat wreck, that are all reached by simple sea transport, usually local outriggers. These can be hired reasonably from any beach, along with snorkelling gear if necessary.
